History of Mensano

Mensano is a small town, in the municipality of Casole d'Elsa, this lies at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level.

With just under 100 inhabitants, the town of Mensano boasts two churches, which are of priceless architectural value.

Pieve di San Giovanni Battista, parish church of the hamlet, this is an ancient place of worship in the Sienese region, attributed to the architect Bonamico, whose earliest record dates back to Dec. 29, 1171, with Pope Alexander III's bull confirming the ownership of the "plebem de Menzano cum parochialbus ecclesiis" to the bishop of Volterra. Of interest inside are the fourteen capitals partly attributed to the master Bonamico that bear similarities to two of his works placed in the Pisa cemetery, and a Romanesque stone baptismal font.

Oratory of St. Blaise, an ancient plebian church, dating from the early medieval period and formerly included in the cope of St. John the Baptist, was later reduced to an oratory and is a simple stone building with a gabled facade.
